Excel Links Not Working

Excel

Problem: I pasted hundreds of web site addresses into Excel. They did not turn into hyperlinks. I found that I could select a cell, press F2, then Enter to make the hyperlink. But I don't want to have to do that hundreds of times.

In Excel, select Edit Links in the Queries & Connections group on the Data tab. Click Startup Prompt. Click the Don't display the alert and don't update automatic links option. If you choose not to update the links and not to receive the message, users of the workbook will not know that the data is out of date. Highlight and delete all files beginning with external links. Amend the file extension to the original.xlsx (or in my case.xlsm) Open spreadsheet in Excel – choose to repair sheet. Save and enjoy an unlinked spreadsheet. The only problem with this technique is that its quite a blunt tool and will remove all external links. The excel sheet resides in the same directory as the files I am trying to link to. I made the links as you normally would with Excel - just pasted in the link as if it were a website (copied the file path to the OneDrive location). But none of the OneDrive links work. It just says cannot open it. So obviously I'm doing it incorrectly.

  1. Pasted hyperlinks are not hot.

Strategy: Use the =HYPERLINK() function. Insert a blank column near your data. Use =HYPERLINK(A1,A1).

  2. The second A1 is supposed to be a friendly name.

Enter the formula and copy it down to all rows.

  3. Column B contains live hyperlinks.

Hide column A, leaving column B intact.

Gotcha: This strategy works great for web addresses that have the leading http://. It will not work for cell A5. A hyperlink will appear, but when someone follows the hyperlink, it will say the address is invalid. In that case, you could use this formula: =HYPERLINK('œhttp://'&A5,A5).
